Role of the School Counselor The role of the school counselor has changed considerably over the years. The school counselor is a certified professional educator who assists students as they seek to identify and achieve personal and academic goals. The counselor guides students as they assume rights and responsibilities in various life roles at each developmental stage. The counseling department assists the students by using a multidisciplinary approach and consulting with teachers, parents, administrators, community agencies, physicians, psychologists, the courts and mental health professionals.
